Explore the Trails of Weber County
Weber County is known for its stunning landscapes and diverse hiking opportunities. Whether you are a novice or an experienced hiker, the trails here offer something for everyone. As you immerse yourself in nature, you’ll find not only a workout but also a chance to relax your mind.
These trails provide a unique experience, allowing you to connect with the beauty of the natural world while improving your fitness. It's a perfect combination that can enrich your life in many ways.
1. Waterfall Canyon Trail
Waterfall Canyon Trail stands out as one of Weber County's hidden gems. This 2.5-mile round trip hike takes you to a stunning waterfall that flows magnificently during the spring melt.
As you traverse the trail, the combination of mild to moderate challenges and panoramic views is truly rewarding. Many hikers report feeling invigorated by the cool breeze and often dip their feet in the stream. This trail not only works your muscles but also gives your heart a good workout, improving your cardiovascular fitness as you navigate the significant incline.

2. Mount Ogden Trail
The Mount Ogden Trail is perfect for those ready to elevate their fitness routine. Covering 4.3 miles, this challenging hike offers spectacular views of the Ogden Valley and Salt Lake City once you reach the top. The trail features an impressive elevation gain of over 1,400 feet, making it an ideal workout for stamina and endurance.
While it might take effort to reach the summit, the experience is both thrilling and rewarding. Many hikers find that the journey brings them a sense of accomplishment and significant stress relief. Research shows that spending time in nature reduces cortisol levels, making this hike beneficial for both mental and physical health.
3. Malans Peak Trail
For those seeking an invigorating experience, the Malans Peak Trail is approximately 4.5 miles round trip. It is famous for its breathtaking views of the Ogden area and the Great Salt Lake. This trail challenges your physical limits with its steep paths, perfect for building leg strength.
Picture yourself hiking alongside tall pines and vibrant wildflowers, with panoramic vistas unfolding before you. Many hikers report feeling a sense of mental clarity while navigating this trail, enhanced by the fresh mountain air. The invigorating ambiance can uplift your spirit, making every step of your journey worthwhile.

4. Ben Lomond Trail
If you're ready for a serious challenge, tackle the Ben Lomond Trail. Spanning approximately 8.4 miles round trip, this trail features steep and rocky terrain that will truly test your stamina. It rises to an elevation of over 9,700 feet, making it one of the highest peaks in the area.
The effort you put into reaching the summit pays off with unparalleled views and a satisfying sense of achievement. Research indicates that reaching challenging goals can foster a positive mindset and elevate self-esteem, which makes the trek worthwhile.
I try to get out and experience this trail annually, but you likely need to wait until July to avoid snow. It's best to start early in the morning to dodge the heat. Don't forget to pack lunch and take plenty of pictures along the way!
5. Indian Trail
One of my favorite hikes in the Ogden Area is the Indian Trail. Located at the top of 22nd Street on the East side of Ogden, this trail can also be accessed in Ogden Canyon just west of the Alaskan Inn. It is a challenging 8.4-mile out-and-back hike, or can be hiked from one end to the other if you want to take two cars.
The views along the trail are magnificent. You can see the Great Salt Lake, Ogden Canyon, Ogden City, and the surrounding mountains. This trail features log cabin and teepee structures along the path. It is a challenging yet amazing hike.
The peaceful atmosphere allows for mindful walking. This promotes not only physical fitness but also mental well-being. Many explorers appreciate how these tranquil settings reduce stress levels. Engaging with nature enables you to restore your focus and recharge for daily life.
Honorable Mentions
If you prefer a more beginner hike, the Bonneville Shoreline Trail stretches from Pleasant View all the way to Weber Canyon. It can be hiked in sections, and is relatively flat.
Another option is the Ogden River Parkway, which offers a paved trail from the mouth of Ogden Canyon to the mouth of Weber Canyon. For something a bit more challenging, consider the Lewis Peak Trail from North Ogden Divide.
The Fitness Benefits of Nature
It is clear that these fantastic hikes elevate your heart rate and engage your muscles, but there's more to consider when integrating nature into your fitness routine.
Studies reveal that spending time outdoors can boost mood and lower anxiety levels. For example, a study published in Environmental Science & Technology found that exercising in natural surroundings can increase feelings of happiness and reduce depressive symptoms by 71%. The fresh air and sunlight enhance Vitamin D levels and increase energy, making outdoor workouts more enjoyable.
Hiking activates various muscle groups—from your legs to your core and back—promoting overall strength and stability. The diverse terrains found in nature keep workouts engaging and enjoyable, helping you avoid boredom that can lead to burnout.
Moreover, taking time away from screens and reconnecting with your surroundings fosters a balanced lifestyle. This reconnection with nature guides you toward improved physical health and mental wellness.
Embrace the Great Outdoors
Weber County is a treasure trove of breathtaking hiking opportunities that invite you to connect with nature while improving your fitness. From cascading waterfalls to majestic peaks, every trail presents its unique challenges and benefits. By embracing outdoor hikes, you can not only get fit but also enjoy a wealth of mental health advantages that nature offers.
